HOMELESSNESS

Homelessness is one of the biggest problems in our country, especially in NY. At least 1 in 17 people are homeless, and this statistic is only growing as the pandemic continues. With many of the major causes of homelessness attributing to other major factors in our society, this is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately.

Organization: Hope for New York. As one of the largest volunteer organizations in New York, they partner with over 60 non-profit organizations. This organization dedicates itself to providing services and resources to the poor and marginalized population of New York. On their site, you can find dozens of short and long-term volunteer opportunities relating to supporting the poor and disadvantaged population. (Different opportunities have different age limits so make sure you pay attention!)

Resource: Many of those who are homeless struggle to find enough to eat daily and suffer from food insecurity. One of the best ways to directly contribute and help those who are homeless is to serve, offer, and donate food to your local food pantry or meal provider. Plenty of food pantries are looking for volunteers that can assist them in serving and donating food. You can find your local New York food pantry through the link below.

Organization: The Bowery Mission. As one of the biggest meal providers in New York, this organization has been consistently offering assistance to the homeless population through providing food services since 1879. As it is a soup kitchen, you can donate food and volunteer to help them serve (14+). To donate food, link. To get involved and volunteer,

Organization: Coalition for the Homeless. Established in 1981, this organization is the nation's oldest advocacy and direct service organization dedicated to serving homeless people. On their website, they provide resources and programs for the homeless or on the verge of homelessness. They also provide information on the homeless population of New York, ways that you as teens can help, resource guides, and a daily tool for action.

Organization: United States Interagency Council on Homelessness. For news, statistics, solutions to end homelessness, and some tools for action, take a look at their website.
